In the early days of the Nigerian scam, the Australian government estimated that victims of the scam lost about $55 million per year in that country alone. While computer users are becoming much more savvy, so too are the scammers. A more recent twist on the scam is setting up an internet romance and convincing the poor person who thinks he or she is about to meet their loving partner to help out with travel costs. The person never arrives, of course, once the money has been wired.
