Primary hyperhidrosis (which isn’t caused from anxiety or any other condition) must be diagnosed by a doctor. Your doctor may give you prescription creams and antiperspirant to help control your sweat glands. As excessive sweating is managed over time, your feelings of anxiety and depression may also subside. If anxiety and depression don’t go away despite treatment for hyperhidrosis, you might need help for these conditions too. Both anxiety and depression may be treated with therapy or medications like mild antidepressants. In turn, these treatments can also decrease stress that can make your sweating worse. Staying active and social among friends and family can also boost your mood.

‘Toteham’ (the farmstead of a man called Totta) was first recorded in Domesday Book, as was a weir at present-day Tottenham Hale. From the twelfth century Tottenham’s accessibility to London attracted wealthy merchants and religious institutions to its wooded slopes, although the main village consisted only of a cluster of dwellings at Tottenham Green. Six inns were recorded on the High Road in the mid-15th century and Tottenham manor house (now Bruce Castle) lay almost a mile to the north of the green. Henry VIII made a payment to the hermit of Tottenham when he visited the house in 1517. Over the course of the next two centuries mansions, private schools, groups of almshouses and other charitable institutions were built near the High Road, while extensive woodland survived to the west and the marshy meadows lay undisturbed to the east. Only in the late 18th century did development begin to branch away from the High Road along old tracks like White Hart Lane and new roads like Bruc

An early settlement evolved on the edge of the City beside a ‘hole bourne’ or stream in a hollow, at the far right of the map below. The stream became known as the River Fleet and was later covered by Farringdon Street and Farringdon Road. The depth at which that route runs beneath Holborn Viaduct gives an idea of quite how hollow the valley was. The road now called Holborn (Holborn Viaduct east of Holborn Circus and High Holborn west of Gray’s Inn Road) was in existence as Holeburnestreete by 1249. Holborn developed as a medieval suburb of the City, with houses that steadily increased in impressiveness over time. The Bishop of Ely built a palatial town house at present-day Ely Place, where its 13th-century chapel, dedicated to St Etheldreda, survives today. The bishop’s garden was noted for its strawberries and, in Richard III, Shakespeare has the Duke of Gloucester say, “My lord of Ely, when I was last in Holborn / I saw good strawberries in your garden there / I do beseech you sen
Although the street is relatively new, it commemorates a site of exceptional importance during the Dark Ages. When the Saxons colonised the London area in the 5th century, after the Romans had departed, they established a riverside market town beyond the city walls, calling it Lundenwic. The Thames was much wider then, and the Strand marks its shoreline. In 886 Alfred the Great captured London from the marauding Danes, refortified the city and moved the trading activities of Lundenwic within it. A century or more later, a Danish community resettled the vicinity of the old market – which is what ‘Aldwych’ means. [Incidentally, Londoners are divided on the question of whether to call the street ‘Aldwych’ or ‘the Aldwych’.] The church of St Clement Danes is said to be the burial place of the half-Danish Harold I, Harefoot, who ruled England from 1035 to 1040, first as regent for his half-brother and then as king. The church was gutted by fire caused by bombing during the Second World Wa

In prehistoric times this was a coastal area and archaeological investigation has revealed evidence of Palaeolithic as well as (much later, obviously) Roman habitation. The name of Wanstead, which may have meant ‘white house’ or ‘house on the wen-shaped hill’ or ‘place where wagons are kept’, was first recorded in 824 and there was a woodland hamlet here by 1100. Early settlement was confined to the vicinity of the manor house at what became Wanstead Park, with its nearby church of St Mary. Neighbouring farms progressively turned to market gardening as access to London improved. The village began to attract wealthy residents from the mid-18th century, considerably later than places such as Woodford. When the church was rebuilt in its present form in 1790 there were just 120 houses here, four-fifths of which were gentry-owned. High-class suburban development began to the north around 1860, after the opening of a station at Snaresbrook. Visible in the photo above,* Christ Church was co
