Phantastic Imagery and Social Debt in Arnold Zweig’s Novel “The Axe of
Wandsbek”
Zweig’s novel is a piece of testimony to a life of false belief, hopes and
expectancies. It projects the body of thought of the Nazi regime to the inner life
of the two main characters, the married couple Albert and Stine Teetjen.
They represent the average German citizen that is loyal to the “Führer” and at the
same time leads a normal life, abiding to a set of economical and social rules.
Stine for instance behaves economical on her purchase of stockings and Albert
cuts down on his cigarettes and even reuses butts that other people throw away
to reduce their costs.
