In most regions of the United States, the symbol is traditionally called the pound sign, but in others, the number sign. In Canada, the symbol is traditionally referred to as the number sign while in Britain it is known as the hash sign. In fact, major telephone equipment manufacturers, such as Nortel, have an option in their programming to indicate Canadian Pronunciation, which in turn instructs the system to say "Number Sign" to callers instead of "Pound Sign".
