Ende 1808 hatte er ein Schauspiel fertig, das den Vernichtungskampf gegen einen übermächtigen Feind am antiken Muster darstellte: »Hermannsschlacht« – nach Ansicht des Kleist-Experten Gerhard Schulz ein »blutgetränktes« Stück, das »die Methoden des totalen Krieges« vorwegnimmt. In Kleists nächstem Drama war der kriegerische Visionär »Prinz Friedrich von Homburg« der Titelheld.
