det as a subject

det som subjekt

It’s not possible to have one’s fill-up of det because det is amazing! When there’s no subject in a sentence, we use det! Isn’t it amazing? Det is then the formal subject.

Det regner. (It’s raining.)

Det gjør vondt. (It hurts.)

Det blåser. (It’s windy.)

In addition we use det to introduce a logical subject in the indefinite form:

Det er mange båter på vannet. (There are many boats on the water.)

Det står ingen el-sykler i sykkelstativet. (There’re no e-bikes in the bike stand.)

Det kommer mange fiskere til Norge. (Many fishermen come to Norway.)

Det means either “it” or “there”, as you can see based on the examples above. Note that it’s not always the case because in the very last example English doesn’t use any impersonal subject.

AKTIVITET

Gi to eksempler på bruk av det som subjekt.

Eksempel: Det er vår. Det er noen troll i Nordmarka.
